Giving Back this Holiday Season with Goodwill
The holidays have a way of making us pause. Amidst the rush of gift wrapping and cookie baking, there is often a quiet moment where we look around and feel deeply grateful for what we have. That gratitude naturally leads to a simple question: “How can I share this warmth with someone else?”
This season isn’t just about the presents under the tree; it’s about the presence we offer our community. It’s about the unseen threads that connect us all—the belief that everyone deserves a chance to shine, to work, and to build a life they are proud of. When you choose to give back through Goodwill, you aren’t just donating a coat or buying a vintage vase. You are becoming part of a story of transformation. You are helping neighbors find dignity through the power of work.
The Power of a Simple Donation
We all have that closet or drawer we’ve been meaning to organize. Maybe it’s a winter coat that hasn’t been worn in two years, or a set of dishes that served your family well but has since been replaced. While these items might seem like clutter to you, they hold the potential to change a life.
When you drop off a box of gently used clothes or household goods at a Goodwill donation center, you are fueling a powerful engine of hope. The revenue generated from the sale of these items goes directly into funding employment training and job placement services.

We’re reminded of Gabby Bayron, who came to the Excel Center as a single mother with a six-month-old daughter, Ava. Gabby enrolled Ava in the drop-in center, a safe and nurturing space where, while Gabby was in class, Ava learned to crawl, walk, and talk—reaching those important milestones surrounded by caring adults. Gabby poured her heart into her studies and earned 22 high school credits, 6 college credits, and maintained a 3.14 GPA. Her journey was not without challenges, but every achievement was a testament to her grit and vision for a better future. To celebrate her accomplishments, Gabby traveled to Japan—a dream come true. Now, she’s working toward her next goal: earning her bachelor’s degree in business. Gabby’s story is just one example of the transformative power of community support and the hope that grows when we lift each other up.
What to Donate This Season:
- Warm Clothing: Coats, sweaters, hats, and scarves are always in high demand during winter.
- Household Goods: Kitchenware, decor, and small appliances.
- Electronics: Old computers or tablets that can be refurbished or recycled.
It is an honest, simple way to make room in your home while making room for someone else to succeed.
Shopping with Purpose
Giving back doesn’t always have to mean giving things away. Sometimes, it means shopping with intention. Holiday shopping can feel frenetic and commercial, but stepping into a Goodwill store offers a different experience. It’s a treasure hunt, yes, but it’s also a direct investment in your community.
Every purchase you make acts as a financial contribution to Goodwill’s mission. When you find that perfect unique holiday sweater or a rare vinyl record for a friend, your dollars are hard at work. They are paying for career counseling for a veteran transitioning back to civilian life. They are supporting a young adult with disabilities as they navigate their first job.
Shopping at Goodwill is also an act of kindness toward the planet. By choosing second-hand, you are extending the life of items that might otherwise end up in a landfill. It is a sustainable choice that aligns with the spirit of stewardship. This holiday, consider filling your stockings with finds from Goodwill. You’ll be giving a unique gift to a loved one while simultaneously giving the gift of opportunity to a stranger.
Volunteering: The Gift of Time
For those who want to get even closer to the mission, volunteering offers a hands-on way to serve. There is something profoundly moving about working side-by-side with others who are dedicated to lifting up their community.
Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake accepts volunteers to help us at our annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Resource Fair. They are the heart of the event! We also accept court-ordered community service in our retail stores as a portion of our re-entry work!
Giving your time is perhaps the most personal gift of all. It says, “I see you, I value you, and I am here to help you succeed.” If you have a few hours to spare this holiday season, reach out to your local Goodwill. They can guide you toward opportunities that match your skills and schedule.
A Ripple Effect of Kindness

The impact of your involvement with Goodwill extends far beyond what you can see. It creates a ripple effect. When one person finds a job, their entire family benefits. Financial stability returns, stress decreases, and hope is restored. That individual then becomes a contributing member of the community, shopping at local businesses and perhaps even giving back themselves one day.
We recently heard from James, a young man who faced significant barriers to employment due to a past mistake. He felt defined by his worst moment. But through a Goodwill training program—funded by donations and shoppers like you—he found a mentor who saw his potential, not his past. Today, James is a manager at a logistics company. He stands tall, not just because he has a paycheck, but because he regained his self-worth.
This is what you support when you engage with Goodwill. You are supporting second chances. You are supporting the idea that our past does not dictate our future.
How to Get Started Today
Getting involved is easier than you might think. We know the holidays are busy, but kindness doesn’t require a massive overhaul of your schedule.
- Do a “Give Back” Clean-Out: Spend an hour this weekend gathering items you no longer need. Involve your kids and explain how these items will help others.
- Visit a Store: Make your next shopping trip count. Look for your local Goodwill and see what treasures await.
- Spread the Word: Share the mission with friends and family. Let them know that Goodwill is more than a store; it’s a nonprofit dedicated to changing lives.
This holiday season, let’s embrace the spirit of giving in its truest form. Let’s give opportunities. Let’s give hope. Whether you donate, shop, or volunteer, know that you are a vital part of a story that ends with someone finding their way. Thank you for being a neighbor who cares.
