While Goodwill is primarily known as a place to donate gently used items, people are often surprised to discover that Goodwill’s mission is to place people into jobs. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. is one of Maryland’s largest providers of employment, training, and support services for people with disabilities, those laid off from their jobs, individuals formerly receiving public assistance, or coming out of our prison system, and those with low or even no work-skills.

Most employers know that looking for the right employee can take countless hours of resume searching. Some positions can be extremely difficult to fill with employees who are “job-ready.” Goodwill focuses on training individuals to help them learn job readiness skills, boost their work history, and help them advance their skills. Goodwill’s education and training programs help individuals achieve success in fields like healthcare, manufacturing, retail, customer service, and hospitality.

Goodwill’s overall employment strategy is to develop partnerships with employers to provide them quality employees and beneficial employment opportunities. Some of these partnerships have included a 12-week Culinary Arts Training program with The Maryland Food Bank, a 16-week Certified Nursing Assistant training program operated by St. Vincent de Paul and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), and a Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician Certification with the Community College of Baltimore County.

Goodwill also works with employers by holding hiring events for those expanding their workforces with multiple staffing opportunities.  Goodwill works with over 500 companies throughout the region including Johns Hopkins Health System, Franklin Square Hospital, Horseshoe Casino, 7-Eleven, and Chipotle.

Goodwill is providing employment solutions with the ultimate goal that if people achieve greater self-sufficiency individually, together we can build stronger neighborhoods and communities. That’s an employment solution that benefits all of us.

My brother is in need of help. He was a productive upholding citizen and had a good job with benefits for several years. He was unexpectedly laid off. That’s when the spiral of bad things happened. He was in a fight and sentenced to 4 months in a detention center. While in detention his girlfriend of 15 years + put the house on the market and is kicking him out. He has no where to go, and is in the deepest depth of depression. I was hoping you could give me some ideas to help him. Thank you , verna lang
