The Goodwill Path to Employment: Jerita

By June 30, 20172 Comments1 min read

Jerita knew it was time to make a change in her life. After 35 years of drug use and being in and out of the prison system, she wanted to choose a new path. While incarcerated, Jerita took Goodwill’s Job Readiness Classes and learned how to create a resume and prepare for interviews.

Once released, she came to Goodwill for computer/clerical training and enrolled in a substance abuse program. She was also able to take part in Goodwill’s Transitional Work Program and gain on-the-job training in a Goodwill retail store.

Since coming to Goodwill, Jerita has been able to get her driver’s license, purchase a car and open a bank account. Jerita has recently become employed as a house manager at a transitional house, and now assists other women who are returning from prison.

I am currently seeking employment but due to my background it has been difficult, Whatever assistance or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have truly learned from my mistakes and now face the consequences of poor decisions. I just need a second chance opportunity at 33 years old, .I know I can contribute to any organization, My technical skills are excellent. I have two years of college and very motivated. I have a son and daughter that I cannot provide for without proper employment…Because of child support debt my license has now been suspended so I have to depend on other transportation. Once I obtain employment I can start making the proper payments to get my licence back. It has been a vicious cycle that I truly regret. I was seeking something in the Washington/Metro area. Any assistance or direction for employment would be greatly appreciated!!. Thank you. LE Mitchell 240-766-4151 or 202-617-8697

    Hi Lafayette,
Unfortunately our territory does not cover the Washington Metro area. Please reach out to the Goodwill in DC, Goodwill of Greater Washington. Their website is available here http://www.dcgoodwill.org/
