On Saturday, April 19th, the Greater Baltimore community came together to celebrate sustainable fashion and laundry care in honor of Earth Day. Hosted by Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake and The Laundry Basket LLC, the Refresh Your Wardrobe workshop offered attendees hands-on, practical strategies to make their clothing last longer, reduce waste, and improve their eco-conscious habits.
The event was held at two locations, Ellicott City and York Road, bringing together sustainable fashion enthusiasts and curious shoppers across two counties for an engaging, informative, and fun-filled day.
Workshop Highlights
The event featured four interactive sessions, each designed to educate and inspire attendees about sustainable living practices. Here’s a closer look at what made the day extraordinary:
1. The Art of Stain Removal
Guests gathered around to watch a live demonstration of stain treatments for common mishaps like wine, grease, and ink. Participants walked away feeling amazed by the myth-busting techniques offered by The Laundry Basket LLC, who also introduced eco-friendly alternatives to harsh cleaning chemicals.
2. Preserving Clothing & Longevity
Attendees participated in an interactive laundry care session, learning best practices for washing, drying, and storing everything from delicate fabrics to sturdy synthetics. An energetic quiz about fabric care added a dose of fun while emphasizing how small sustainable shifts can save money in the long run.
3. Upcycling & Repurposing
With textile waste being a global issue, this session brought sustainability creativity to life! With DIY demos on garment transformation, attendees learned how to upcycle old clothes into fresh, fashionable statement pieces. A crowd favorite? The t-shirt-to-tote bag activity, which had everyone eager to try more upcycling at home!
4. Building a Sustainable Wardrobe
Shoppers discovered the secrets to assembling a sustainable wardrobe from thrifted finds, all while learning about the environmental toll of fast fashion. The session emphasized mindfulness when choosing clothing and included a fun trivia quiz about secondhand fashion practices.
The day was made even more impactful with the participation of the Howard County Repair Café volunteers, who provided 1-on-1 tailoring tips and upcycling advice at the Ellicott City location. Danielle, the CEO of Baltimore-based nonprofit D7etta, also joined in to share useful fashion hacks that support sustainability.
To thank attendees for their participation, Goodwill giveaways added a delightful surprise:
- Exclusive Goodwill giveaways and coupons
- Reusable Goodwill wool dryer balls
- Raffled Goodwill gift cards
- Limited-edition “Greener Planet” t-shirts, plus other eco-friendly goodies from The Laundry Basket LLC
The response to the workshop was overwhelmingly positive. The sessions were highly engaging, with participants staying the full 2 hours. A crowd-favorite was learning how to transform old t-shirts into tote bags. The workshop created an inviting atmosphere where new ideas and shared stories fueled conversations about small but meaningful ways each person can contribute to a greener planet.
