STEP: Supported Employment for people with Psychiatric Disabilities

By August 4, 20166 Comments2 min read

Since its founding in 1986, the Schapiro Training & Employment Program (STEP) has been a pioneer in the supported employment movement for people with psychiatric disabilities who are also economically disadvantaged. At STEP, now a Goodwill program, experienced Rehabilitation and Employment Specialists assist clients in learning the skills necessary for successful job performance and placing them into competitive employment.

The Supported Employment program helps individuals with serious and persistent psychiatric disabilities secure and, most importantly, maintain employment. Some of the needs addressed include application assistance, employee-employer job matching, networking, interviewing techniques and on-the-job coaching.

Tynisha was determined to make a change in her life. After trouble finding employment, she enrolled in STEP, and ultimately found a job as a lead child care teacher at a daycare center. She hopes to eventually work as an elementary school teacher or open her own childcare service.

STEP is also noted for training participants to work as para-professionals in human services. The Human Services Program is a collaborative effort with the Community College of Baltimore County.
