Celebrating Goodwill Week: May 4-10, 2025
For more than 70 years, Goodwill organizations across the U.S. and Canada have commemorated Goodwill Week during the first full week of May to raise awareness for our life-changing mission.
Here’s what you need to know:
- There is a Goodwill location within 10 miles of 83% of the U.S. population.
- Goodwill is comprised of 154 member agencies. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves Central MD and the Eastern Shore.
- Donating items to Goodwill extends the life of items as part of the circular economy.
- Goodwill stores fund free career and educational services for those facing challenges to finding or maintaining employment.
- Goodwill functions using a circular model- our lifechanging Workforce Development Programs are funded by the sale of donated goods.
- Many individuals in our community are struggling with poverty, homelessness and lack of access to the resources they need to move into jobs with livable wages.
Mission Moment
After leaving the US Marine Corps, Mr. Candia encountered challenges in pursuing his dream field of radiology. Through a recommendation from his mother, he joined Goodwill’s Buena Alianza program in late 2021. He quickly crafted a resume, securing a role as a camp
counselor. Simultaneously, with the guidance of his Buena Alianza Case Manager, he diligently pursued a career in the medical field. Completing Goodwill’s Job Readiness/Digital Skills Training Program, supported by Operation Achieve’s stipend, he charted a path to a one-year apprenticeship in Surgical Technology. Despite a six-month wait due to application availability, Mr. Candia applied, excelled in the entry tests, and commenced his Surgical Tech Apprenticeship in October 2022. By December 2023, upon graduating, Mr. Candia not only achieved his role as a Surgical Technologist but also made history as both the first Goodwill participant selected for the program, and the first apprenticeship student to be placed on the prestigious Cardiac Team immediately after graduation. In recognition of his outstanding work, he received a raise within just four months. Poised to further his ambitions, Mr. Candia is planning to gain valuable experience in the field before using the GI Bill to pursue a medical education and fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor.
