How Goodwill’s Circle of Hope Transforms Donations into Dreams
Every time you clean out your closet and drop off a box of gently used clothing, you do something remarkable. You hand someone a lifeline. At Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, we know that a simple donation is never just about getting rid of old items. It is about creating new beginnings for people who are striving to build a better future for themselves and their families.
We want to pull back the curtain and show you exactly how your generosity fuels our work. Our model is simple yet profoundly powerful. We call it the Circle of Hope. It is a fully transparent cycle designed to maximize community impact while minimizing environmental waste. When you give, you help us turn everyday items into jobs, education, and sustainability.
Here is exactly how the Circle of Hope works, and how your contributions create ripples of positive change throughout our community.
What is Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake’s Circle of Hope?
Our model is simple yet powerful, and it’s designed to maximize impact while minimizing waste:
- Community Donations: It all starts with you. When you donate gently used items, you’re giving more than goods—you’re giving hope.
- Retail Sales: We sell the best donated items in our 29 retail stores. Find your local store today.
- Outlet Store: Any items that go unsold in our retail stores move on to get sold by the pound at our Kenwood outlet store, also knows as the “Goodwill Bins,” making affordable goods accessible to more people and giving these items another chance at life.
- Recycling: Items that remain unpurchased are recycled, reducing landfill waste as much as possible. Learn more about our sustainability efforts.
- Mission Funding: Revenue from these sales funds workforce development programs and our adult high school, the Baltimore Excel Center.
- Community Impact: Graduates secure jobs, strengthen families, and build thriving communities.
- The Circle Continues: Every donation keeps this cycle alive.

Tyeeshia’s Journey: From Dropout to Graduate

financial stress. Goodwill designed the Excel Center Adult High School model to remove those barriers by offering flexible scheduling, transportation assistance, and on-site child development centers.
At just 15 years old, Tyeeshia Cannady faced a life-altering choice. She dropped out of high school when she found out she was expecting her first child. For many, that might be the end of their educational journey. But Tyeeshia held onto a quiet, persistent dream of finishing her education and building a secure life for her children
When Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake opened the Baltimore Excel Center in 2023, Tyeeshia saw her opportunity. The Excel Center is a free, public high school for adults. We know that returning to school as an adult is intimidating. Many of our students juggle jobs, parenting, and financial stress.
Tyeeshia was featured on ABC’s Nightline News when the school first opened its doors, and her curage caught the attention of the nation. But the real story happened over the next three years. Through late nights of studying, balancing family life, and showing up even when things felt impossible, she persevered.
Just three years after enrolling, Tyeeshia has completed all of her requirements, and will be walking across the stage in June. Through our integrated career programs, she also earned her Certified Lodging Security Officer Certification. Today, Tyeeshia stands as a proud member of the Class of 2026. Her path proves that resilience can overcome any obstacle. When we watch graduates like Tyeeshia succeed, we see the direct result of your donations at work.
