Earth Month 2026 in review

How We Champion Sustainability Every Single Day

April always brings a renewed focus on our planet, and Earth Month 2026 was truly an action-packed time for Goodwill. We dedicated the month to celebrating sustainability, sharing eco-friendly practices, and showing our community exactly how their donations and purchases make a massive environmental impact.

But for us, caring for the environment does not stop when the calendar flips to May. Sustainability is deeply rooted in our everyday work. Every time you drop off a bag of clothing or pick out a thrifted treasure, you help divert usable goods from local landfills.

Let us look back at the incredible events and initiatives we celebrated during Earth Month and explore how we keep that green momentum going all year round.

Turning Plastic Into Purpose: Our NexTrex Partnership

One of our proudest moments this April was stepping into the spotlight on WBAL News to showcase our ongoing sustainability partnership with NexTrex.

Plastic waste remains a significant challenge for our environment. Through our collaboration with NexTrex, we actively collect and recycle donated plastic films and bags that might otherwise end up in oceans or landfills. NexTrex takes these recycled materials and transforms them into beautiful, durable, composite decking.

Our feature on WBAL News allowed us to share this incredible recycling initiative with a massive audience. It highlighted the power of circular economies—showing viewers how everyday plastic waste can find a permanent, useful home instead of polluting our local ecosystems.

Why Plastic Recycling Matters

When we rethink how we handle waste, we create a cleaner community. By partnering with organizations that share our green vision, we multiply our impact. Every piece of plastic we send to NexTrex represents a small victory for our local environment and proves that collaborative recycling programs truly work.

Connecting with the Community at Howard County GreenFest

Goodwill at Howard County Greenfest 2026

We believe that protecting the planet is a team effort. That is why we proudly sponsored and participated as a vendor at the Howard County GreenFest on April 11th.

GreenFest provides an amazing opportunity for local residents to learn about environmental stewardship, and we loved being part of the energy. At our booth, we showcased unique Goodwill finds, proving that secondhand shopping is a fantastic way to discover high-quality, distinctive items while reducing your carbon footprint.

Our team spent the day chatting with community members about our recycling initiatives, answering questions about sustainable fashion, and demonstrating how simple it is to incorporate eco-friendly habits into everyday life.

Inspiring Creativity with DIY Upcycling Tips

Why throw something away when you can reinvent it? Upcycling—the art of transforming old or discarded materials into something useful and beautiful—is a core part of the thrift shopping experience.

To spread this creative spirit, we joined CBS News live on WJZ to share some fantastic DIY inspiration. We walked viewers through practical, easy-to-follow tips and tricks for breathing new life into old household items and clothing.

The Joy of Upcycling

Upcycling allows you to personalize your space and your wardrobe without draining your wallet or natural resources. A simple coat of paint can turn a dated wooden chair into a modern statement piece. A few simple sewing alterations can transform an oversized vintage shirt into a trendy summer outfit. By showcasing these ideas on live television, we aimed to inspire viewers to look at their old items as materials full of potential rather than trash.

Retail Celebrations and Sustainable Fashion

Our retail stores are the heart of our sustainability mission, and we made sure to bring the Earth Month celebrations directly to our shoppers.

Throughout April, our store teams sported special green Earth Day shirts to raise awareness. We focused heavily on educating our shoppers about the environmental benefits of sustainable fashion. The fast fashion industry contributes heavily to global pollution and water waste. By choosing to shop secondhand, our customers actively reduce demand for new clothing production and keep perfectly good textiles out of local landfills.

To say thank you to the shoppers who drive our mission forward, we also hosted a Double Points Day. It was a wonderful way to reward our community for making eco-conscious shopping choices while discovering great deals.

Your Impact This Earth Month and Beyond

April gives us a wonderful platform to shine a spotlight on our environmental initiatives. We loved seeing ourselves on WBAL and CBS News, and we loved meeting so many of you at GreenFest.

However, the truth is that caring for our planet is simply part of who we are. From January to December, our stores serve as community recycling hubs. Every single day, we process thousands of pounds of donations, ensuring that household goods, electronics, and textiles find new homes.

This massive, year-round environmental impact is fueled entirely by you. Without our dedicated shoppers and donors, none of these sustainability initiatives would be possible. You provide the materials we recycle, you purchase the items we save, and you fund the community programs we run.

Are you ready to see exactly how your donations and purchases help the planet? Learn more about Goodwill’s local environmental impact and discover how you can get involved in our year-round mission to build a greener, cleaner community for everyone.
