Baltimore’s Excel Center Adult High School Hits 100 Graduates
Education offers a powerful pathway to a better life, but the traditional high school experience does not work for everyone. Many students find themselves stepping away from their studies due to life circumstances, family obligations, or economic hardship. For years, the road back to a diploma felt steep and unforgiving, and the GED test is quite the feat.
Goodwill decided to change that narrative.
In an effort to raise education attainment across Indiana, Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana launched The Excel Center in 2010—a diploma-granting public charter high school thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of adults whose life circumstances interrupted their education. This innovative model quickly resonated beyond Indiana, inspiring Goodwill’s in communities nationwide to bring hope and opportunity to adults seeking a second chance.
We were honored to bring this model to Baltimore, opening The Excel Center in September 2023, and are now proudly building on this legacy of transformation right here in our city.
The Goodwill Excel Center Adult High School has a clear vision: provide a flexible, supportive environment where adults can finally earn their Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) high school diploma. Now, we are thrilled to celebrate a breathtaking achievement. The school has officially submitted its 100th graduate for MSDE graduation.
Even more impressive? The doors have been open for less than three years.
A Remarkable Milestone in Record Time
Reaching 100 graduates is a monumental event for any alternative education program. Hitting this number in under 36 months is nothing short of extraordinary.
When Baltimore Excel Center welcomed its first group of students, the staff knew the demand for adult education in Baltimore was high. However, the speed at which students have embraced this opportunity and crossed the finish line exceeds all expectations. This accelerated success speaks directly to the dedication of the students. They balance jobs, childcare, and personal hurdles, yet they show up ready to learn and advance their lives.
This rapid milestone also highlights the effectiveness of the school’s model. By offering flexible scheduling, wrap-around support services, and dedicated life coaches, the school removes the traditional barriers that keep adults from finishing their education. Students do not just get a desk and a textbook; they get a dedicated team committed to seeing them succeed.
Redefining Education in Baltimore
We operate this tuition-free school with a unique mission. We understand that a high school diploma is often the first vital step toward sustainable employment and economic independence.
The curriculum at Goodwill Excel High School goes beyond standard academics. Students receive career readiness training, industry certifications, and job placement assistance. The organization designed the entire experience to bridge the gap between education and meaningful career opportunities.
For the Baltimore community, this creates a profound ripple effect. When 100 individuals earn their diplomas, 100 families experience a shift in their economic trajectory. Graduates step into higher-paying jobs, pursue higher education, and model the importance of perseverance for their children. The community gains a stronger, more educated workforce ready to contribute to the local economy.
What This Achievement Means
For the students, becoming part of the first 100 graduates validates their hard work and resilience. Many of these individuals previously believed a high school diploma was permanently out of reach. Walking across the stage and holding that MSDE-certified diploma proves that second chances exist and that their future remains unwritten. They now possess the credentials to unlock promotions, enroll in college, or pivot to entirely new careers.
For us, this milestone serves as powerful proof of concept. It demonstrates that when you combine education with compassionate, holistic support, you can break cycles of poverty. We took a bold step in opening an adult high school. Seeing 100 students achieve their goals validates the countless hours of planning, fundraising, and community outreach that made the school possible.
Looking Ahead to the Next Hundred
The celebration of the 100th graduate is just the beginning. As Goodwill Excel High School looks to the future, the momentum continues to build. More adults in Baltimore are discovering this life-changing resource, and enrollment continues to grow. The class of 2026 will walk the stage next month, and we can’t wait to celebrate them!
The staff and administration remain focused on expanding their reach, enhancing their career training partnerships, and supporting every new student who walks through the doors. The first 100 graduates have paved the way, setting a standard of excellence and determination for all future classes to follow.
